Calabria: for years, one of Italy’s best-kept secrets and now Home International's latest investment opportunity.
Perhaps you feel you missed the best time to invest in Spain – the days of being able to pick up property cheaply are long gone and many coastal areas are blighted by high-rise developments – but have dismissed Italy as too expensive. Time to think again: Calabria offers superb value for money compared to its urban northern neighbours – Milan, Venice and Bologna.
Home International is delighted to offer its customers this unrivalled opportunity to invest in beachfront property on Italy’s original Riviera. Calabria has long been popular with Italians as a holiday destination but until now has remained relatively undiscovered as a holiday destination for foreign holidaymakers. In the latter half of 2006, the stunning potential of this area was finally recognised and around 1000 beachfront units were built – and promptly snapped up. Home International has joined forces with a prestigious UK developer to create this remarkable project. Our UK developer partner is a public company and can offer the expertise, security and peace of mind our customers demand. We provide international expertise in selling properties and top-notch customer service and they bring a wealth of experience building this type of development in Mediterranean locations: definitely a winning combination.
As with every product we offer, Home International has performed due diligence, ensuring that all relevant permissions and paperwork are in place: we can offer our customers complete peace of mind in their future investment.
Calabria: How Do I Get There?
Travelling to Calabria is simple and affordable. Ryanair and Easyjet offer cheap flights to Rome, and from there a connecting flight can be made via Italy’s own airline, Alitalia, which flies several times a day to Calabria’s two airports: Reggio Calabria and Lamezia Terme. Calabria now has its own motorway – the N3, which links up with the A1 and provides a fast, easy route all the way up to Northern Italy.

Living the Dolce Vita
Calabria is the southernmost part of the Italian peninsula – the ‘toe’ at the bottom of the boot, separated from Sicily by a narrow strip of water known as the Strait of Messina. Calabria lies between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas and its coastline is famed for its stunning beaches. “Lido” Beach Clubs are exclusive to Italy and provide services such as beach chair and umbrella hire, bar service, baby-sitting and play groups for children. There are also hundreds of deserted coves along the Calabrian coast – providing the ultimate in peace and quiet and pure relaxation. Once you begin to explore this remarkably beautiful region you will discover for yourself just how unspoilt the area is. The region boasts a fabulous panorama of rugged and untamed mountain ranges: the Appenines; the Pollion Massif of the north which merge into the Catina Costiera mountains of the south; the La Serre Mountains which reach down into the toe of Italy; and the Sila Mountains and forests east of Cosenza. Calabria’s fledgling ski industry is just beginning to take off. Venture inland and in many of the villages you will feel as though you have stepped back in time: labyrinths of cobbled streets with whitewashed stone houses – complete with black-clad grandmothers sitting outside, with one eye on their needlework and the other on the children playing.
You will find the Calabrese people warm, open and welcoming – children are welcome everywhere, and you will feel as though you are among friends. Hospitable, and keen to share the beauty of their region, you will be made to feel at home wherever you go. The cuisine of the region is delightful – traditional ingredients are honey, almonds and figs. Pork and swordfish are eaten in abundance, as are all kinds of pasta dishes. The region produces sweet white wines – Greco di Bianco is the most well-known.
Culture & History
Calabria may be Italy’s least famous region but it is also one of the oldest with a rich history stretching back into classical antiquity when it was the heart of Magna Graecia (Greater Greece). It has had several names: Saturnia, Ansonia, Enotria, Tirrenia, Espenia, Italia – finally fixing on Calabria in the 7th century AD. Calabria’s history is evident wherever you go – there are numerous archaeological sites, cathedrals, monasteries and churches. Occupied through the ages by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths, Saracens, Moors and Normans, Calabria’s rich cultural history is reflected in the variety of languages and dialects spoken throughout the region – though the official language is Italian. The region has produced a number of famous sons and daughters: writers, philosophers, a Nobel Prize winner, artists, footballers, fashion designers and even a couple of Popes. Both Pythagoras and Gianni Versace hailed from Calabria!
Sicily is a short and inexpensive journey away by ferry and a day-trip there is a must. There you can visit ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins, climb the slopes of Mount Etna, shop in the exclusive boutiques of Catania and then indulge yourself in one of Sicily’s world-famous gelato (ice cream) bars.
