During the middle ages, the nobility fought over the area, as evidenced by the Ricca castle, defensive walls and coastal watchtowers, including Torre Vecchia and Torre Nuova, all built during that time period. Today it is an important farming center and since 1970 has been appreciated by tourists for its natural beauty.
